I admire his ability to voice-act with such intensity and expressiveness (which is not so common for his voice type) more than his coloratura abilities. I also love the way he combines his striking low range with his countertenor range. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am not sure if this recital is on DVD but you can find a recorded version of this aria released as a 3 cd box set under Erato label, titled "Handel: Tamerlano" with English Baroque Soloists conducted by Elliot Gardiner. Ele se destaca pelo retrato pouco romântico que faz dos bastidores da música erudita. Já contestou a importância do regente no livro O Mito do Maestro e ironizou as festividades em torno do aniversário de 250 anos do nascimento de Mozart. Sua obra mais recente, Maestros, Masterpieces and Madness (Maestros, Obras-Primas e Loucura), discorre sobre o desaparecimento iminente dos discos de música erudita e o impacto cultural desse acontecimento. O livro contém uma lista das 100 gravações mais influentes da história. O toque ácido fica por conta de um outro ranking, com os vinte piores discos de todos os tempos. "Até reuniões de gênios podem resultar em desastre", diz o autor. São as gravações de música erudita que estão morrendo. Mas o significado cultural dessa perda é enorme. É algo assim como se Veneza afundasse nas águas, no meu entendimento. As gravações são uma atividade artística muito especial, diferente de um recital ou concerto ao vivo. Elas pedem outro tipo de disciplina, uma busca mais obstinada pela perfeição, pois qualquer deslize ficará registrado para sempre, sem disfarce. A era das gravações começou em 1902, com um disco de árias pelo tenor italiano Enrico Caruso, e agora está chegando ao seu final melancólico. Nesse meio tempo, ela tornou possível duas coisas. Primeiro, fez com que uma parcela fundamental de nossa civilização – as criações de Bach, de Haydn ou de Beethoven – se tornasse acessível a qualquer um, em qualquer lugar do planeta. Em segundo lugar, permitiu que nossa tradição fosse esmiuçada e reinterpretada como nunca antes, fazendo e desfazendo reputações, alterando o gosto musical continuamente. Enfim, não é a música que está morrendo, mas a maneira como as pessoas descobriram a música e conviveram com ela ao longo do último século. Não é pouca coisa. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Veja &lt;strong&gt;– O que levou a essa situação?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ff6600;"&gt;Lebrecht &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;– Dois fatores: o impacto causado pela música pop e o desaparecimento de um certo tipo de executivo ligado às gravadoras de música erudita. Bastam alguns números para se ter uma idéia do primeiro fenômeno. Em 1965, um em cada quatro discos vendidos era de música erudita. Oito anos depois, à medida que as gravações de rock e outros gêneros de música pop se popularizavam, a proporção já havia caído para um em 25. Um único grupo de rock, os Beatles, vendeu 1,3 bilhão de discos ao redor do mundo em cerca de quarenta anos. Isso equivale ao total de vendas da música erudita em quase um século. Em outras palavras, foi cada vez mais difícil para as gravadoras manter-se saudáveis e preservar sua fatia de mercado. Mas as pessoas ligadas a essas gravadoras também tiveram culpa. Os pioneiros da era das gravações foram pessoas extraordinárias. Estou falando de personagens históricos como Elsa Schiller, ex-prisioneira de um campo de concentração que ajudou a criar a Deutsche Grammophon, o mais famoso entre os selos eruditos. À medida que essas pessoas se aposentavam, profissionais despidos de sensibilidade e imaginação as substituíam. O que fez Goddard Lieberson, lendário presidente da gravadora Columbia, com o primeiro grande lucro que obteve nos anos 60? Ele reinvestiu todo o dinheiro em música. Contatou o compositor russo Igor Stravinski e o convenceu a gravar toda a sua obra na companhia. Da mesma forma John Culshaw, da Decca Records, era tão fanático pelo ciclo O Anel dos Nibelungos, de Richard Wagner, que financiou a gravação integral da obra pelo regente húngaro Georg Solti. Pois bem. Na década de 90, as companhias de discos viveram o boom do CD, quando todo mundo trocou sua coleção de vinis pelos compact discs. O que os novos diretores de gravadoras fizeram? Lançaram mais e mais do mesmo, sem pensar na inovação. Hoje existem 475 gravações de As Quatro Estações, de Vivaldi, e 275 Quintas Sinfonias, de Beethoven. Quem precisa de tudo isso?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Veja &lt;strong&gt;– Na literatura, costuma-se dizer que cada geração precisa de uma nova tradução de Homero ou Shakespeare. Não é natural que os clássicos sejam sempre revisitados?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ff6600;"&gt;Lebrecht &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;– Há uma diferença entre repetição e reinterpretação. Eu não critico a reinterpretação. Apreciar a evolução das interpretações da Quinta de Beethoven, do regente Arthur Nikisch, em 1913, a Gustavo Dudamel, em 2005, é sem dúvida uma experiência extraordinária. Meu problema é com a repetição indiscriminada. Num mesmo ano recente, foram lançados três discos contendo a Quinta Sinfonia, de Anton Bruckner, e dois contendo Tristão e Isolda, de Wagner. A indústria ficou sem idéias, perdeu o controle e partiu para lançamentos sem critério artístico. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Veja&lt;strong&gt; – Há futuro para a música erudita?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ff6600;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Lebrecht &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;– Sim, na internet. Em quatro ou cinco anos, creio que vamos desfrutar apresentações transmitidas pelo computador. As gravações também poderão ser distribuídas em formato digital, sem a intermediação de gravadoras. Infelizmente, muita coisa vai se perder até lá. Por exemplo: o regente de ascendência italiana Antonio Pappano, titular da Royal Opera House, liderou recentemente quatro récitas de O Anel dos Nibelungos. Não houve gravação em CD, muito menos em DVD. Ficarão apenas na memória de quem teve o privilégio de assistir a elas em Londres. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Veja&lt;strong&gt; – Seu livro mais recente contém duas listas: uma com as 100 melhores e outra com as vinte piores gravações já feitas. Qual é seu propósito com essas listas?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ff6600;"&gt;Lebrecht &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;– A primeira lista não é exatamente sobre as "melhores" gravações, mas sobre as mais significativas, aquelas que deixaram uma marca e fizeram com que os discos eruditos se tornassem, ao longo do século XX, um artefato cultural tão importante. Discuto menos as qualidades intrínsecas da música do que as circunstâncias da gravação do disco e o seu impacto. Por exemplo, quando o alemão Fritz Kreisler gravou o Concerto para Violino de Beethoven com a Berlin State Opera, em 1926, mudou para sempre a maneira como se tocava violino, pois acrescentou um vibrato às passagens mais suaves da música para compensar as inadequações da reprodução sonora. Da mesma forma, o registro das Sonatas e Partitas para Violino de Bach, feito em 1973 por Nathan Milstein, levou muitos violinistas eminentes a jurar nunca tocar aquela música, pois parece impossível superar a performance de Milstein. Quanto à lista dos vinte piores discos, ela foi sobretudo uma diversão. Eu poderia facilmente ter listado cinqüenta. Novamente, o propósito não era apontar música ruim feita por músicos sem talento. Pelo contrário, queria mostrar que mesmo uma reunião de gênios pode resultar num desastre. É o caso da célebre gravação do Concerto Triplo de Beethoven feita pelo trio de ouro Richter, Oistrakh e Rostropovich em 1969, com Herbert von Karajan na regência. Ela os mimou demais, e muitos se sentiram como semideuses. É o caso de Herbert von Karajan, um artista talentoso mas de uma vaidade absurda, que dominou o mercado por quase meio século. O bom regente, na minha opinião, é aquele que coloca a sua personalidade numa orquestra. Eu não percebo isso num Daniel Barenboim, que passou mais de uma década à frente da Sinfônica de Chicago e não avançou nenhum milímetro em relação à época em que a orquestra era comandada por Georg Solti. Em compensação, poucos têm a personalidade de Lorin Maazel. Certa vez, Mariss Jansons, outro regente que admiro, foi ao meu programa de rádio. Ele disse que demorou cinco anos para se livrar da sombra de Maazel, seu antecessor na Sinfônica de Pittsburgh. A isso chamamos personalidade. Entre os novos, creio que o venezuelano Gustavo Dudamel fará uma carreira brilhante. Eu o vi algumas vezes e fiquei impressionado. Um spalla de uma das maiores orquestras do mundo me mandou um dia desses um e-mail com a seguinte frase: "Não compare Dudamel com nenhum outro regente. Em 60 anos de vida, jamais me vi diante de um músico tão fenomenal". &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Veja – &lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;No século XX, a música erudita fugiu da melodia em busca do atonalismo. Ele ganhou corpo numa era de trauma e ruptura, o período da II Guerra Mundial, quando um grupo de compositores quis criar músicas que não tivessem relação com o passado. As platéias viram essa mudança como uma traição. Existia uma idéia de que artista e público tinham de andar lado a lado. Quando uma das partes muda de estilo e diz que não quer saber a opinião do público, cria-se um impasse. O atonalismo afugentou as platéias e essa rejeição atingiu muitos autores contemporâneos que faziam uma música menos atonal. Como o compositor checo Bohuslav Martinu, que sofreu uma rejeição sem precedentes sem de fato a merecer. Hoje em dia, acho que artistas e platéias estão menos radicais. Seu editor se orgulha de jamais ter publicado uma crítica negativa – e acho pouco provável que tenham sido lançados apenas discos sensacionais. Além disso, é comum que os editores mostrem as resenhas aos executivos das gravadoras antes de elas serem publicadas. Os jovens não querem ir a um local em que o público tem a mesma idade de seu pai ou de seu avô, e com isso se perpetua a idéia de que a música erudita é algo formal e envelhecido. É uma pena, porque o envelhecimento das platéias também se reflete nos artistas. Outro dia, a violinista Anne-Sophie Mutter declarou que pensa em se aposentar. Ela tem apenas 44 anos, poderia ter mais três décadas de atividade. Mas a decisão dela é compreensível se pensarmos que Anne-Sophie toca sempre o mesmo concerto para as mesmas pessoas. O maestro austríaco Nikolaus Harnoncourt, especialista na obra de Mozart, já defendeu a tese de que sua música não traz grandes inovações em relação ao que foi feito por Haydn – este, sim, um grande gênio. O que mais me irrita é a mozartmania, que dá origem a caça-níqueis como as gravações para bebês ouvirem quando ainda estão na barriga da mãe. No ano passado, praticamente todas as gravadoras lançaram discos dedicados a Mozart. Como se a obra dele fosse tão poderosa a ponto de trazer o público de volta para a música erudita. Isso aconteceu? Claro que não. E não porque música clássica ou erudita - ou seja lá como queiram classificar - são chatas (algumas são mesmo, é verdade!) mas sobretudo porque os "entendidos do assunto" são soberbos e têm esse mesmo universo como algo particular, que lhes confere uma distinção especial afastando-os de tudo aquilo que possa ser "popular".&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;color:#cc33cc;"&gt;Há poucos dias li uma pesquisa realizada por uma entidade ligada aos produtores de vinhos que o consumo per capita caiu... foram buscar as razões e descobriram que, o que era um prazer, o que era uma oportunidade de beber um bom vinho se transformou em um espetáculo cênico nos restaurantes e casas especializadas. A teatralidade "exigida" para se apreciar um vinho é tanta que grande parte das pessoas acabam optando por outra bebida mais "fácil" de pedir e degustar. É incrível mas é isso mesmo! Ambas, a música clássica e os vinhos, sofrem os efeitos da ganância e da arrogância de pequenos grupos que se entendem senhores absolutos nessas áreas (são adeptos da velha e perniciosa hierarquia colonial que ainda sobrevive neles) e os interesses por boa bebida e boa música, demonstrado por outras camadas sociais, são vistos com horror. Seu primeiro sucesso, The Maestro Myth (O Mito do Maestro), publicado em 1992, provocou grandes discussões entre os especialistas na obra dos compositores clássicos. Nele, Lebrecht, formado em psicologia e sociologia e colunista do jornal inglês The Daily Telegraph, dispara a metralhadora giratória contra músicos e empresários, os quais considera responsáveis pelo declínio, nos últimos anos, da audiência dos teatros de ópera e concertos. Tudo nela, hoje, é previsível. E o pior: as pessoas vão a um concerto para ouvir exatamente aquilo que ouvem no CD. &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ÉPOCA&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;: Isso é ruim?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Lebrecht&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;: Péssimo, pois representa a negação da própria música. A gravação é a fotografia de um momento. O regente Otto Klemperer dizia que ouvir um disco seria o mesmo que levar uma foto de Marilyn Monroe para a cama.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ÉPOCA:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt; Para o compositor Gustav Mahler, a música não deveria ser executada duas vezes da mesma maneira. E tem de delegar poderes a um indivíduo que, na maioria das vezes, é incapaz até mesmo de tocar decentemente um instrumento. Na última década, o público deixou de considerar o regente como herói. Por isso, começou a gravitar em torno da figura do compositor. Passam somente dez ou 12 semanas por ano trabalhando com a orquestra sobre a qual supostamente devem exercer liderança. Às vezes, chegam ao local do concerto no mesmo dia da apresentação. Mal acabaram de aprender a partitura no avião. A presença deles não acrescenta nada à vida dos músicos ou à da platéia. Os regentes são pessoas muito ocupadas, que lidam bem com dinheiro. Têm de falar várias vezes por dia com seus brokers para decidir que ações comprar ou vender. Alguns, como Lorin Maazel, têm até jato particular.&lt;/em&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ÉPOCA:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt; Maazel é um talento fenomenal e, como Daniel Barenboim, possui uma memória privilegiada.&lt;/em&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Lebrecht:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt; Os dois apresentam semelhanças, mas Maazel tem uma técnica de regência muito superior à de Barenboim. Como ocorreu o casamento entre eles?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Lebrecht:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt; Para celebrar a Copa de 1990, eles cantaram juntos, pela primeira vez, em Roma, acompanhados por Zubin Mehta. Foi uma Copa do Mundo muito fraca, cheia de resultados 0 a 0. Ninguém fazia fé nessa união. Nem mesmo os tenores. A gravadora Decca investiu pouco no projeto e pagou em torno de US$ 170 mil a cada cantor. E, o mais importante, eles não tiveram direito a royalties pela comercialização de CDs ou vídeos. A coisa explodiu, e a Decca vendeu 11 milhões de CDs. Compreensivelmente, os tenores se arrependeram. Com o lucro do projeto, a Decca pôde investir em repertório e artistas novos. Na Copa de 1994, os tenores disseram: “Desta vez, o preço é diferente”. Fizeram um leilão entre as companhias de discos e a Decca foi recusada por Plácido Domingo, ainda ressentido com o mau negócio realizado em 1990. A Warner acabou levando o projeto com um lance de US$ 16 milhões, a ser dividido entre os três, além dos royalties. Foram vendidos 12 milhões de discos e mais uns 2 milhões de vídeos. Com a exorbitância paga aos cantores, os lucros se foram antes mesmo de o projeto começar. E não sobrou nada para ser reinvestido. Na Copa de 1998, os três receberam outros US$ 16 milhões. Mas desta vez não venderam tanto. A Warner e a PolyGram – hoje Universal – perderam uma fortuna e levaram o resto da indústria à falência. Esse é somente o lado financeiro, responsável pela extinção da indústria fonográfica.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ÉPOCA:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt; Mas isso não gerou um aumento enorme de audiência para o mundo da ópera?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Lebrecht:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt; Foi exatamente o que os três disseram. Mas, na verdade, ocorreu o contrário. A partir do momento em que começaram a se apresentar juntos, dois deles (Luciano Pavarotti e José Carreras) pararam progressivamente de cantar ópera. O processo é terrível e cruel. Há quatro anos, quando escrevi Quem Matou a Música Clássica?, existiam seis grandes companhias de disco. Hoje temos somente duas e não durarão muito. São dinossauros que olham ao redor e não mais encontram árvores altas.
